A Typical Adoption Journey
1. Decision
Making the decision to place your baby for adoption is the most selfless decision you can make as a mother. After coming to this decision, Hope Clinic can refer you to a number of adoption agencies to continue your adoption journey.
2. Take Action
Once you have chosen an adoption agency, your team will walk you through creating the right adoption plan for you. This will include:
- Discussing the kind of family you wish to adopt your child
- Deciding any pre- and post-placement contact you wish to have with the adoptive family
- What kind of financial assistance you’ll receive during your pregnancy
- What you want your hospital experience to be like
3. Foundation
Depending on the kind of situation you choose, you can set up meetings with the family your child will be adopted by. These will be facilitated by the adoption agency.
4. Preparation
Your adoption specialist will collaborate with you to develop a hospital stay plan tailored to your preferences and comfort. Throughout the adoption process, all medical expenses related to your pregnancy will be fully covered (with the possibility of receiving additional financial support for living expenses).
It’s entirely up to you to decide whether you want the adoptive family present during the delivery at the hospital, among other choices.
5. Recovery
Once you decide to place your baby for adoption with the chosen adoptive family, it’s natural to experience emotions of grief and loss, which is a completely normal response. To help you navigate through these feelings, it is highly recommended that you seek the support of a counselor.
At Hope Clinic we firmly believe in the importance of anticipatory grief counseling, which will assist you in preparing for the adoption process and guide you in staying committed to your adoption plan.
Experienced adoption counselors are equipped to help you prepare for the emotional challenges ahead and provide you with coping strategies. Additionally, maintaining post-placement contact through an open adoption with the adoptive family can be immensely beneficial in dealing with these emotions.
This ongoing connection will also serve as a reminder of the reasons why you made the decision to choose adoption in the first place.
